The varied grouse in the
province offer excellent upland game bird hunting opportunities.
Alberta's boreal zone offers the best ruffed grouse
hunting in the province. Ruffed grouse are found throughout
Alberta's except the treeless alpine. Snap shooting
is the best way to bag a grouse. It's best to hunt the
edges of wooded areas rather than the interior to get
a good shot. Blue grouse occur only in the foothill
and mountain zones. Blue grouse are secretive, quiet
birds often difficult to locate. A good bird dog is
a definite benefit. Blue grouse are very camouflaged
and easy to overlook, but may allow you to approach
them at close range. Sharp-tailed grouse are
closely related to the prairie chicken and are scattered
throughout Alberta. These birds are easily spooked,
it's a good idea to bring a dog that works at medium
to close range so they don't flush out of range. Spruce
Grouse are often called the 'fool hen' because it
refuses to flush, opting instead to sit tight in trees.
As with most of upland game bird hunting it is best
to hunt with a close working dog, otherwise the dog
will push the birds into the treetops and you'll lose
any chance of a good shot.
Hungarian Partridge,
officially called gray partridge, is the most abundant
upland game bird and it's the choice target for upland
game bird hunting. They are now well-established in
the prairies and parklands of Alberta. They often flush
as a group in an attempt to distract predators. The
ring-necked pheasant is of the more popular types
of upland birds. They are found the dense cover bordering
irrigation ditches and nearby grainfields. They are
common throughout central and southeastern Alberta in
agricultural areas of the prairie and parkland zones.
The only breeding
population of willow ptarmigan found in Alberta
is in the mountains of northern Jasper National Park
and Willmore Wilderness Park. These birds breed on the
Arctic tundra and migrate south to spend the winter
in northernmost Alberta in the Boreal, Foothills, Mountain
zones.
