Mountain Goat Hunting in Alberta

Mountain goat hunting in Alberta was halted in 1988 to preserve a dwindling population. Since that time, the numbers of these animals have been steadily increasing. In 2001, the Fish and Wildlife Division is offering a limited mountain goat hunt in southern Alberta for Alberta residents only. For this reason, some alberta hunting outfittters have hunts available in British Columbia, Canada The mountain goat lives in rocky mountainous areas above the timberline throughout parts of North America. British Columbia's population is by far the largest in North America at approximately 100,000.

The slender, black shiny horns rise in a backward curve to a length of 10-12 inches. The record length was from a female goat whose horns measured 12-4/8 inches. The tip to tip spread is usuaIly about ten inches.

Mountain Goat are are best hunted in November, when their full capes make them a really striking trophy. Mountain goat hunting is not easy. They inhabit the roughest possible terrain in the mountain ranges of BC, usually remaining at or above timberline and within easy reach of rocky bluffs or crags. They may travel short distances through forests and valleys but will seldom linger there, and although deep snows may force them to lower elevations, they prefer to remain high in the mountain.

The hunter has to be in good physical condition and experienced. Many of the hunts are done on horseback or backpack on foot. This is an extreme hunt and very exhilerating.
