Hunts with Moose Row, Alberta Hunting Outfitters & Guides
I
am Barry Baumbach and I'll be your guide. I am new to the outfitting
business. 2005 was my first year as an outfitter. I have been guiding
for other outfitters and hunting most of my life. I am an avid bow
hunter. I live where I hunt and live to hunt. At times I've even had
to hunt to live. Hunting and wildlife have always been a passion of
mine. I enjoy meeting people, and working with them. That is why I
am in the outfitting business. I offer hunts in WMU 338 in the foothills
region of Alberta, 75 miles west of Edmonton. The area covers about
1200 sq. miles and consists of 85% forestry and 15% agricultural lands.
The terrain varies from flat to gently rolling foothills. There are
many creeks in the area, which drain down to the rivers. Many of these
creeks drain from huge muskeg bogs where the moose, elk and deer make
their home. I live and hunt in the area and have access to many private
lands and crown land. There is minimal hunting pressure from residents
in the archery season.
MULE
DEER HUNTS
The current B&C world record mule deer was harvested in the
area. It was a long time ago, but you know that the genetics will
still be here to grow some horn. Our mule deer hunts are a spot
and stalk type of hunt, as well as tree stand hunting in transition
areas, and in feeding areas. We like to offer the mule deer hunt
as a combo hunt for a trophy fee. It is also a great hunt for your
wife or son/daughter. There is some pretty good mule deer hunting
in the area, they seem to inhabit just certain pockets because the
whitetail have taken over a lot of the area. So we concentrate our
hunt in these places where the muleys hang out. Expect to see muleys
in the 125-160 range.
WHITETAIL DEER HUNTS
Alberta is world renown for its whitetail hunting, so when I say
that WMU 338 provides good whitetail hunting you won't be surprised.
Every year we see bucks ranging all the way up to 200 inches. I
can't guarantee that you will harvest a 140-150 class whitetail,
but I will guarantee that they are here and that you will see them.
We hunt predominantly in tree stands. We may sit on the ground in
a blind once in a while. In September, we hunt feeding areas and
transition areas. In Oct. during pre-rut we hunt over scrapes and
along rub-lines, as well as transition areas and field edges. We
will do some calling at this time, rattling, and grunting. There
is lots of daylight and the temperatures are comfortable which makes
for an enjoyable hunt!
ELK
HUNTS
Alberta is quickly becoming popular for its archery elk hunting.
There is a healthy population of elk in WMU 338. The 2nd week of
Sept. is when the elk start their rut. During the rut we will do
some calling. Bugling and cow calls. It gets your heart pumping
when the big guys start coming in. In Oct. we hunt feeding areas
a little more. Setting up an ambush on a herd is going to get your
blood flowing too. Calling is still effective during this time as
well. Although during the rut is the best time to call. There are
some great bulls here. Hunters are killing bulls all the way up
to the 360-380 range. That is really something for a bow hunter.
A realistic goal in this area for a bull would be the 250-300 range.
Don't be surprised to see a 350 class bull though.
PREDATOR
HUNTS
We do some predator hunting as well. There is an abundance of coyotes
in our area and there is the odd wolf pack around as well. The months
of December, January, and first part of February is when we hunt..
It is a lot of fun to sit out there and do some calling. But have
your hammer cocked, because they come in pretty fast sometimes.
